Women's cricket has flourished at Sefton Park in the past few years and judging by some of the performances this season of our under 11s girls it looks like having a very promising future.
On Thursday evening the girls made the long trip to Leyland CC for a much-delayed Lancashire Cup tie.
Leyland have a very successful women's section and their under 11s side contained a few players who have represented Lancashire but after a difficult start the Sefton girls excelled, taking seven wickets and restricting the hosts to a total of 274-7 from their 16 overs (the sides begin on 200 and lose five runs for each wicket).
Despite some accurate bowling from the home side the visitors hung in there with some determined batting and by the close finished on 259-5 - a brilliant effort from the girls that won some admiring comments from the home fans and coaches.
It was a real team effort but highlights included two wickets apiece for Nancy Green and Diyana Harshi, a great catch from Wren Lavery and a fine opening partnership of 22 runs between Melody Bowman and Bea Shovlin.
Thanks to all the parents who travelled with the girls and especially to Sarah John and Sarah Jackson for all their tireless coaching and encouragement.
